Mud and Misery
Friday, November 17th 2006 - 9:07 AM

The weather in Kabul has turned very cold recently, and for the last couple of days it's rained fairly continuously. The combination of rain and cold is miserable enough at the best of times, but here it's combined with mud as well - just to make sure!

And, of course, as Kabul's normally such a dry place, the drainage is completely inadequate, so there are big pools of water all over the place.

A lot of the roads are dirt, not tar, and the ones that are tarred have bare earth at the sides. So it doesn't have to rain for very long before walking around becomes a slow and tedious process of picking your way through the least muddy parts of the road. There's no street lighting, so avoiding the muddier areas and and the puddles, and trying not to slip over on the uneven road surface, becomes particularly exciting after dark.

But this morning, i'm pleased to say, the sun was shining again! It's still cold - around 10° - but i can handle the cold when it's sunny.
